The DJI Phantom 3 [easyazon_link identifier=”B00VSIT5UE” locale=”US” tag=”rikroukenscom-20″]advanced[/easyazon_link] & [easyazon_link identifier=”B00VSITBJO” locale=”US” tag=”rikroukenscom-20″]Professional[/easyazon_link] controller is great. It has amazing build quality, good controls, long battery life and much more. However there are a couple of ways to upgrade your existing controller to make it even better.

This how to focusses on upgrades with official DJI products. Today I won’t be upgrading the antennas or other things. Consequently this means that the upgrades in this blogpost will not void your warranty.

Disclaimer: I can not be held responsible for any damage to your controller/drone or iPad/tablet during or after following this guide. If you follow every step in the how to there should be no issue what so ever. Ultimately you are responsible for your own upgrades.

What upgrades are there?

Currently there are two official upgrades you can do to your DJI Phantom 3 Advanced or Professional controller.

  1. Upgrade of the plastic mobile device holder to an [easyazon_link identifier=”B00V8QXO6W” locale=”US” tag=”rikroukenscom-20″]aluminium[/easyazon_link] one.
  2. Upgrade the output module to an [easyazon_link identifier=”B013JQ14P6″ locale=”US” tag=”rikroukenscom-20″]HDMI output[/easyazon_link] model.

Today we will be looking into upgrading the [easyazon_link identifier=”B00V8QXO6W” locale=”US” tag=”rikroukenscom-20″]Mobile device holder[/easyazon_link] to an aluminium one.

Why use this upgrade?

The current plastic mobile device holder on top of your controller works great with your iPhone or smaller sized tablets. But as soon as you start using your iPad air or bigger sized tablets you will find that the mount is actually wobbling quite a bit. This is no deal breaker but for a small amount of money you can upgrade this very easily and make it a lot better.

Basically the idea is that you purchase the Inspire One mobile device holder which is made out of aluminium. Making it a lot more sturdy and stiff then the plastic one.

How big is the difference? This big:

Plastic (Phantom 3) Mobile device holder:

Aluminium (Inspire One) Mobile device holder:

As you can see from the images above it’s worlds apart. Upgrading it is actually very easy so lets dive right into it.
If you are looking for the upgrade to the output model stay tuned for later this week.

Difficulty: Very Easy.

When you purchase the[easyazon_link identifier=”B00TL90A1U” locale=”US” tag=”rikroukenscom-20″]Inspire One mobile device holder[/easyazon_link] it will come with all the bits you need to make the upgrade. The items are as pictured below. 1x device holder, 1x screw and 1x flathead screwdriver.

Start by loosening this screw, which keeps the arm attached to the controller.

Once that is loose you will notice that the arm spins freely on the silver bolt.

Loosen the silver bolt by turning it counter clockwise (lefty loosy).

This should disconnect the device holder from the controller. Now you can take it out.

Half way done already, that was easy! Now take your new Inspire One mobile device holder and insert it in the same hole.

Make sure it is tightened snug, No need to overdo it though. Else it might break. Make sure to line-up the screw and loop on the controller and screw in the flathead screw with the accompanying screwdriver.

And that’s it! Now you are the proud owner of a Phantom 3 Advanced/professional controller with a Inspire One mobile device holder!
